Short Answers
Direct explanations for common bearing searches.
What does Oiltech Bearings manufacture?
Oiltech Bearings manufactures, repairs, re-lines and re-engineers whitemetal lined hydrodynamic bearings. This includes journal bearings, thrust bearings, tilting pad bearings and bespoke bearing assemblies for turbines, pumps, compressors, gearboxes, fans and other rotating equipment.
What is a whitemetal or babbitt bearing?
A whitemetal bearing, also called a babbitt bearing, is a plain bearing with a soft tin-based or lead-based alloy bonded to a stronger backing. The soft alloy works with a lubricating oil film to support rotating shafts with good conformability and tolerance of small particles or alignment variation.
When can a failed bearing be repaired?
A failed bearing can often be repaired when the shell, carrier or housing remains structurally sound. Oiltech can strip the old whitemetal, inspect the backing, re-line, machine and verify the bearing. If the original design is causing repeated failures, re-engineering is usually the better route.
Can a bearing be made without drawings?
Yes. Oiltech can reverse engineer a bearing from physical samples, housings, damaged components, partial drawings or general arrangement drawings. This can include measurement, 3D modelling, material selection, design checks, production drawings and manufacture.
Why do thrust bearings fail repeatedly?
Repeated thrust bearing failure can be caused by excessive load, high oil film temperature, inadequate oil film thickness, oil starvation, contamination, misalignment, poor pad support or a bearing design that is not matched to the actual rotation direction and duty.
How does re-engineering improve a bearing?
Re-engineering can improve pad geometry, pivot position, material selection, oil feed, heat transfer, clearances, load sharing and operating temperature. The goal is usually a thicker oil film, lower bearing temperature and a larger safety margin before failure.
